Lemanis' future as Boomers coach uncertain

Andrej Lemanis says his future as coach of the Boomers rests with Basketball Australia.

Lemanis has led the men's national team since April 2013, guiding them through the World Cup in 2014 and to a heart-breaking fourth-place finish at the Rio Olympics.

He returns to the NBL this season with the Brisbane Bullets, having previously coached the New Zealand Breakers to three championships in his eight-year tenure.

But whether that rules him out of the national coaching gig, Lemanis was unsure.

He said that will depend on the impact of the new qualifying format for major tournaments, to start from 2017, in which Australia will go through the Asia-Pacific region instead of Oceania.

"It's up to Basketball Australia now to figure out what the new format looks like and what's best for Australian basketball under that system," the 47-year-old said.

"If they need a full-time coach, then that obviously rules me out.

"If they decide on a part-time coach, that someone coaching in the NBL can do it, obviously we'll have that discussion.

"It's always an honour, but like everybody on the team you do what's best for the team."
