Basketballers pull off stunning win with trick shot

Deliberately missing a shot in any sport usually goes against the grain, but the tactic proved a stunning match-winner for a US college basketball team.

Trailing University of Chicago 76-74, with just 2.7 seconds on the clock and seemingly no hope of victory, University of Rochester guard Sam Borst-Smith was awarded a free-throw .

But showing true cunning, Borst-Smith eschewed the one point on offer and instead aimed to miss the shot and gamble on a rebound, which paid off with brilliant dividends.

Throwing the ball at the rim, Borst-Smith managed to grab the rebound before sending it to teammate Mark Montague, who drained a three-pointer to win the game.

The buzzer beater sent the crowd into a frenzy as the players piled on top of an ecstatic Montague in what proved a sublime example of snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.
