When it comes to top level sport relying on animal-like instinct is a key to success.

Now, US Major League Baseball player Munenori Kawasaki has revealed why he turned to monkeys to help him achieve peak performance.

The Toronto Blue Jays infielder was conducting a mid-match interview about a leg problem that forced him from the field, which he admitted was just a cramp, when he told of his primate inspiration.

Pressed on how he planned to overcome the cramping, Kawasaki revealed eating bananas was the key, before adding straight-faced that "monkeys never cramp".

He then announced he would eat three bananas to combat his cramp and get back into action.

Known for their potassium rich qualities, bananas have long been a favourite of tennis players and many other athletes, with Australian fast bowler Peter Siddle famed for banana diet.
