Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo has been lauded for a brilliant foul ball catch that saw him tumble into the crowd during a Major League Baseball clash with Milwaukee.

With the Cubs leading 2-1 in the sixth inning, Rizzo set his sights on Brewers batter Ryan Braun's skied hit that appeared destined to fall safely into the fans' bay.

But showing a never-say-die attitude, Rizzo chased to the fence, leapt onto the boundary tarp and patiently waited for the ball to drop, before gloving it and falling into the crowd.

The catch was hailed by critics as one of the "craziest" seen in years, but Braun was initially given not out with the umpires believing he was out of play when he made the grab.

However, the call was later reversed after an umpires conference ruled that Rizzo had one foot on the tarp and one on the brick wall before he caught the ball.

The ruling sent the home fans at Wrigley Field into a frenzy and also helped the Cubs secure a hard fought 3-2 victory.
