Baseball: Ball girl turns on home team with innocent gesture

With ball girls like this, who needs enemies?

The Louisiana State University baseball team would have been hard pressed to answer that particular head-scratcher after one of their ball girls innocently turned on her own side in a regional match in the US.

LSU were facing Coastal Carolina when the visitors' Seth Lancaster drove a shot down the right field line at the top of the fifth innings.

But with an LSU fielder rounding on the ball, the damage looked to have been kept to just a base hit - that was until the LSU ball girl stepped into the spotlight.

Believing Lancaster had hit a foul ball, the girl rushed out and picked up the ball even as the fielder raced up behind her.  

She then kindly threw the memento to a lucky fan in the crowd.

The gaffe allowed Lancaster to make it to third base but, on a review of the play, he was moved back to second base.

However, LSU would eventually go down 11-8, giving up nine runs in the final four innings.

Can they blame the ball girl for that?
