WWE's best kept secret

With WrestleMania just days away, taking over the spotlight of WWE’s 205 division, is Australian superstar Buddy Murphy.

Capable of pulling off the most ridiculous and high flying moves has the WWE nicknaming our Aussie gem their best kept secret.

Speaking exclusively to 9’s Wide World of Sports, Murphy says competing at WrestleMania is the pinnacle of the sport.

“WrestleMania is every professional wrestler’s dream, it’s the Grand Final,” Murphy said.

Having been the first Australian to take championship gold in the WWE on NXT, Murphy’s taken the next step and has earnt a future shot at the WWE Cruiserweight Championship.

“’I’m there to show the world what I can do and what I can offer.

“What I want, is to be noticed, I want to be utilised and I want to be the guy.”

Pursuing a pro-wrestling career has its challenges in Australia, with Murphy even being punished at school for daring to dream.

“A teacher asked everyone, ‘what you were going to do when you leave school’.

“She asked me, and I told her I wanted to be a professional wrestler. She actually told me to be serious and re-answer, and I said I wanted to be a pro-wrestler.”

“She wasn’t happy with my answer and gave me a detention.”

“At the time it ticked me off a little bit, but at the end of the day it gave me motivation to succeed,” Murphy said.

A Melbourne boy at heart, Murphy admitted it wasn’t easy making it, with several hurdles in his way..  

“I couldn’t hold a job because I wanted to wrestle on the weekends to perfect my craft.”

“It was a sacrifice because I had no money… It made me into what I am today,” he said.
