Aust hockey pools for Tokyo 2020 revealed

The Kookaburras and the Hockeyroos have been handed favourable pools for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic hockey tournament.

The Kookaburras, ranked No.1 in the world, have been drawn in Pool A of the men's tournament alongside Argentina, India, Spain, New Zealand and Japan.

Current Olympic champions Argentina (4th) are the highest ranked team in Australia's group, with India (5th), Spain (8th) and New Zealand (9th) also ranked inside the top 10.

Hosts Japan are the lowest ranked team in Pool A, sitting 15th place in the world rankings.

Australia have avoided Belgium (2nd), Netherlands (3rd), Germany (6th) and England (7th), who will all compete in Pool B.

The Kookaburras last won gold at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

The Hockeyroos are joined by Argentina, New Zealand, Spain, China and Japan in Pool B of the women's tournament.

Paul Gaudoin's team, who are ranked second in the world, are the highest ranked team in the group, ahead of Argentina (3rd), New Zealand (6th), Spain (7th), India (9th) and Japan (14th).

The Hockeyroos, who won their last Olympic gold in Sydney, have therefore avoided Netherlands (1st), Germany (4th), reigning champions England (5th), Ireland (8th) and China (10th).

Tokyo's hockey competition's will be staged from July 25 to August 7.
