Aussies out of medals at world indoors

Australian long jumper Brooke Stratton says she struggled to adapt to the conditions after finishing out of the medals at the world indoor athletics championships in Portland on Friday.

Stratton recorded a best jump of 6.75m in the second round to finish fifth behind American Brittney Reese, who jumped 7.22m.

Another Australian, Chelsea Jaensch, finished 11th with a leap of 6.38m.

"It is so different jumping indoors, it took a while to get a feel of the runway but I managed to get a 6.75m jump out, which is fantastic," Stratton said.

"Not having the wind behind or in front of me was a bit different.

"Last week in Perth was so windy, and yet here there were no real elements to consider.

"The track was very springy, too, the springiest I've jumped on."

Stratton will now turn her attention to the national as she looks ahead to the Rio Olympics.

"Now it is on to the nationals ... I want to jump something out near or past seven metres again, and having a strong group of competitors alongside me is going to help with that," Stratton said.

On the track, Melissa Duncan and Brett Robinson advanced through to the final of the women's 1500m and men's 3000m respectively.
