The Australian Open will return to The Lakes Golf Club in 2018 after a six-year absence.

The Stonehaven Cup's last visit to The Lakes in Sydney's southeast was in 2012 when veteran Peter Senior battled extreme winds to win his second national title.

The 2017 Open will be held at The Australian Golf Club before The Lakes hosts its seventh national championship from November 22-25, 2018.

Golf Australia chief executive Stephen Pitt said the history of The Lakes complemented Australian golf.

"The Lakes has been a great venue for our national championship in years past and its imagery really helps showcase Sydney and New South Wales to our growing global audience," said Pitt.

"The Open continues to deliver the world's best players to Sydney, as evidenced in recent years when Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth have each springboarded to world number one status and major championship victories after winning the Stonehaven Cup."
