Aussie gymnast Miller's test event silver

Australian gymnast Larissa Miller has boosted her Olympic chances, winning silver in the floor exercise at a test event in Rio.

Just a day after Australia failed to qualify a women's gymnastics team for the Olympics for the first time in almost 30 years, Miller finished just 0.4 points behind Brazil's Saraiva Flavia.

Miller's routine, which included a huge release combo, earned a score of 13.7 from the judges, and could have been higher if not for erring slightly on one of her landings.

Australia have earned just one female Olympic spot for Rio, and the second-place finish will give Miller confidence of securing it ahead of next month's national championships in Melbourne.

She will meet stern competition though most notably in the form of 2010 world champion Lauren Mitchell, who missed the Rio Test event as she continues to recover from a knee reconstruction.

Gymnastics Australia will decide how they utilise the individual berth, with performances at the national titles key.

Miller, 23, won silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in the team and uneven bars competitions.
