West Australian teenager Sasha Zhoya caught the attention of the world after his record-breaking efforts at the National Australian Athletics Championships.

The 16-year-old clocked a national record time of 13.05 seconds in the Under-18 110m hurdles in a headwind, smashing his previous personal best of 13.24.

Zhoya also claimed the under-18 pole vault clearing 5.56m and the Under-20 200m, just falling 0.3 seconds short of a national record in the latter.

"This kid is unbelievable!" Australian athletics legend Matt Shirvington tweeted.

"He’ll compete in the men’s open pole vault and 100m over the weekend ... oh and he’s only 16! "

The buzz around the teenager hasn't gone unnoticed and reportedly Australian athletics officials are concerned Zhoya could be tempted to switch allegiances with one eye on the Paris 2024 Olympics.

His mother is a French skier and is therefore eligible to represent the Tri Colours.

Athletics Australia told Sydney Morning Herald that the governing body is doing “everything in its power” to ensure Zhoya doesn't jump ship.

"I consider myself Australian, absolutely. Being born here, I grew up here, all my friends are here. In my heart I want to do Australia but I need to see how things go. It's a struggle.

"I want to be the guy that you come down to watch, and you have a good time watching him and he does the spectacular thing.
