Young umpire steals the spotlight

A young AFL supporter showed he has all the moves to become a future star of the game – but in the yellow jersey of the umpires.

Hawthorn fan Hugh Florence stole the show during the round 21 clash between the Saints and the Cats when cameras caught him mimicking his favourite men on the field, the umpires.

Decked out in an official umpire's jersey, adorned with the signatures of his current heroes, the nine-year-old became an instant star as he took down the score, signalled a goal and later, during an interview with Cameron Ling, gave his best holding the ball.

Already an official at school games, Florence said it was his dream to take control of an AFL match.

"Before the game I went down to the rooms and I saw the ice bath and met them and got two new signatures on my top," he told Ling.

"I'm definitely going to umpire one day."
