Young Pie sweats on new AFL review process after groin kick

Collingwood's Sarah D'Arcy will find out how much of the AFL Women's season she'll miss on Monday.

New AFL match review officer Michael Christian will assess round one of the AFLW season, with D'Arcy's report for kicking Carlton's Sarah Hosking top of the agenda.

The incident will be a test case for the AFL's new disciplinary process as well as an indication of the weighting given to penalties for players in the shorter AFLW compared to the men's league.

It is understood Christian has the freedom to take into account the short length of the women's season, played over seven rounds, when coming up with a penalty.

D'Arcy lashed out with her left foot and connected with Hosking's groin during Friday night's season opener, the force of the blow lifting the Blues midfielder off her feet and propelling her back into the path of the umpire.

She was reported immediately and had a free kick paid against her.

New AFL footy boss Steve Hocking scrapped the oft-criticised match review panel at the end of last season and installed Christian in a new role designed to streamline the disciplinary process.

The former Collingwood player pledged to be clear and transparent in his decision making and will also make himself available to the media to explain his thought process each Monday.

The act has been described as out of character for D'Arcy, who is believed to be disappointed in her actions.
