West Coast Eagles youngster Daniel Venables will take no further part in the clash against Melbourne after being stretchered off in the first half.

After a Shannon Hurn kick-out, Venables was going back with the flight of the ball to take a mark when his head collided with Melbourne rookie Tim Smith's hip.

Following the brutal collision, Venables' head hit the Optus Stadium turf as he landed on the ground and he laid motionless before being attended to by the Eagles' medical staff.

Former West Coast midfielder Xavier Ellis revealed that Venables was suffering a bad bout of concussion after his fall, but did not need to be hospitalised.

The Eagles' injury issues were compounded just minutes later with ruckman Tom Hickey limping off the field after suffering an ankle injury.

Hickey was a late inclusion in West Coast's side in order to assist Nathan Vardy in dealing with the threat of Melbourne star Max Gawn.

However, Hickey was eventually able to return for the second half of the clash.
