West Coast and East Perth split in WAFL
East Perth has initiated an end to its partnership with West Coast in the WAFL, leaving the Eagles hoping to start their own team.
The West Australian Football Commission were given a notice of termination by East Perth after their board decided to move to a traditional WAFL club structure, WAFC said in a statement.
West Coast chief executive Trevor Nisbett said the club's preferred position was to have its own term in the competition as early as possible.
"Hopefully the WAFL presidents and their clubs will look favourably at having us in as a stand-alone but that is a discussion for the commission and the clubs," he told the West Australian.
WAFC chief executive Gavin Taylor said "significant work" would be required to find a new model as they support the teams through the transition process.
"We respect the decision of East Perth Football Club wanting to return to a traditional WAFL club structure and are committed to having our AFL teams participating in the WAFL competition."
