Tigers lose Edwards, Deledio for round 2

Richmond will lose Shane Edwards for its AFL match against Collingwood and Brett Deledio will also remain sidelined.

Coach Damien Hardwick confirmed on Saturday that Edwards suffered a wrist injury in the narrow win over Carlton and needed surgery.

"At worst it will be a one-weeker," Hardwick told ABC Radio.

Edwards had played on Thursday night despite hurting his shoulder in their last pre-season match.

Deledio missed the Blues match because of a quad muscle injury.

Hardwick said they would take no risks with Deledio, who missed several weeks a year ago when they played him in round one and he aggravated a leg injury.

"It's difficult because you'd love to have him play, but there is a slight risk that if you do push the envelope, he misses two or three more," he said.

Richmond had a tough run with injury through the pre-season, and Hardwick admitted that affected their buildup to the Carlton match.

He said they were hit with the injury stick going into Thursday night, when the Blues nearly staged a massive upset.

"Good sides win ugly and that's fortunately what we did," Hardwick said.

He revealed they would have liked to play another intraclub game before round one.

"We couldn't afford to lose any more players," he said.

"It wasn't the ideal buildup."

Asked if he was relieved to beat Carlton, Hardwick replied, "Absolutely."

But for all their personnel problems, Hardwick is unhappy with how the Tigers played.

In particular, he did not like the way they moved the ball out of defence.

Hardwick also said Chris Yarran and the club had to share some blame for the Carlton recruit's pre-season problems.

Yarran will be out for several weeks with foot surgery.

"He probably didn't come in with the best conditioning - Chris knows that, he's accountable and responsible for that," Hardwick said.

"We didn't realise the serious nature of (the plantar fasciitis) until he went and got a pretty significant scan."

Hardwick is also bullish about Yarran as a long-term prospect.

"I've seen him play some scintillating footy and I have no doubt he's only scratching the surface of what he can do," he said.
