Swans sign Aliir for two more years in AFL

Emerging Sydney AFL player Aliir Aliir has capped off a dream fortnight with the key defender signing a two-year contract extension.

The 21-year-old made his much-publicised debut two weeks ago against Brisbane, playing an important role in the Swans' three-point win.

Born in a Kenyan refugee camp to Sudanese parents, Aliir migrated to Australia with his family seven years later and settled in Brisbane.

It was in Brisbane where he was first introduced to Australian rules football, a sport he excelled in with selection in numerous representative teams.

Originally overlooked in his draft year, Aliir moved to Perth where he worked hard and honed his skills and was eventually rewarded with a place on the Swans' list with the 44th pick in the 2013 Draft.

Swans general manager of football Tom Harley said Aliir's progress had been rewarded with the 21-year-old contracted until at least the end of the 2018 season.

"Aliir's story is unique in so many ways but, in a pure football sense, his commitment to the Swans and ours to him reflects his football development.

"Aliir thoroughly deserved his AFL debut and has played at an extremely high level in the NEAFL this year.

"We look forward to Aliir playing more senior football for the club in the near future," Harley said.
