Young Collingwood star Jaidyn Stephenson faces the prospect of a lengthy AFL ban and large fine if found guilty of betting on a game he played in.

The incident - understood to involve a wager of less than $50 - is being investigated by the AFL Integrity Unit.

Eight years ago, former Magpie and current GWS defender Heath Shaw was banned for eight matches for backing then-Collingwood skipper Nick Maxwell to kick the first goal of a game.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan was grilled in a press conference on Tuesday afternoon about recent controversies making headlines in the game, such as fan behaviour and security, Hawks president Jeff Kennett's troubling comments and on the Stephenson news.

However McLachlan was unwilling to shed any light on the Collingwood star's reported betting scandal or even admit an investigation was ongoing.

"I'm not going to make any comment about anything that may or not be before the Integrity Department," he said.

"I'm not going to deal in hypotheticals."
