Collingwood's injury woes have continued with star midfielder Steele Sidebottom suffering a ruptured testicle in a training mishap.

Sidebottom suffered the rupture after he was accidentally kicked in the groin during training ahead of Collingwood's Friday night fixture against Essendon.

He is scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday and is now facing a race against time to be fit for the Magpies' finals campaign in a fortnight's time.

Collingwood's general manager of football Geoff Walsh said it was unclear how long the reigning Copeland Medal winner would be sidelined after his surgery.

"Steele was in clear discomfort but the extent of the injury and an anticipated recovery period won't be known until after the surgery," he said.

"It is certainly disappointing for Steele but the upside is that we have the break between the end of the home and away season and finals to give him added time to recover."
