Simpson to meet with Ryan

West Coast Adam Simpson says controversial AFL premiership forward Liam Ryan should have known better than to play in a regional Australian rules match last weekend.

Simpson and Ryan are expected to meet later on Wednesday.

Early last Sunday morning, the 22-year-old Ryan was issued with a move-on notice by police, with the incident believed to be linked to a family dispute.

He also played in a regional match on the previous day at Kalbarri, near Geraldton, without the permission of the Eagles.

"We are just trying to find out a bit more about the facts of the situation," Simpson said on Wednesday.

"I heard he was playing football and that's not ideal.

"I'm pretty sure he didn't know he shouldn't be, although he should naturally know that.

"But as a first-year player coming from such a different cultural background, there's a lot of things we're trying to work through.

"We are trying to show as much as support as we can, but he has to get better in some areas as well."

In a separate incident, Ryan was banned last week from driving for 18 months and fined $1700, plus court costs of $205, after he was caught drink-driving on July 2.

Ryan crashed his car into a tree in the Perth suburb of Armadale and recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.138.

The Eagles suspended Ryan for two AFL games at the time of that incident.
