Hawthorn legend Shane Crawford has suggested that Dustin Martin's bid for an AFL record third Norm Smith Medal could be ambushed by one of his teammates.

After taking out the illustrious award in Richmond's two Grand Final wins in 2017 and 2019, Martin is aiming to do what no player has in VFL/AFL history this year.

However, Crawford revealed that Geelong legend Jimmy Bartel had pointed him towards an interesting trend that could tip the award away from Martin, even in a Tigers win.

"We're all trying to work out who is going to win the Norm Smith Medal and obviously you think of (Patrick) Dangerfield, you think of Dustin Martin, but halfbacks have got very good records at winning this," he told Wide World of Sports' Full Time.

Bachar Houli Dustin Martin

Could Bachar Houli, last year's Norm Smith runner-up, do a number on Dusty in a Richmond win? AAP

"You look at (Jason) Johannisen from the Bulldogs, Luke Hodge, (Bachar) Houli was runner-up last year, they've got good records at polling a lot of votes.

"If you're looking for a bit of a roughie, you've got (Liam) Baker who plays down there, Houli, you've also got (Tom) Stewart from Geelong.

"They've got a good polling history because they've got to create, they've got to run and they've got to use the ball.

"Even Shane Edwards, if he pushes back and helps the defence a fair bit and gets a lot of the footy, he's fresh and he's a wonderful player."
