Alastair Clarkson wants Jarryd Roughead to guide the next generation and the Hawthorn star has taken it to heart, even helping his VFL opponent.

Roughead gave some tips to Footscray's Reuben William, who was playing on him during the Sunday curtain raiser at the MCG.

Dropped for the first time since 2007, the former Hawks captain kicked five goals for the Box Hill Hawks as they drew with the Bulldogs.

Match footage showed Roughead's class as he clearly gave pointers to Reuben.

The Hawk legend's former teammate Campbell Brown teased him on TV about the gesture.

"He probably is (giving advice), knowing the guy, but I can't believe that," Brown said on Channel Seven.

"If that was me, I'd be telling my direct opponent to run in all the wrong positions. I'd be giving him a lot of things to do that you should not.

"But Roughy, he probably is - what a bloke."

Clarkson spoke at length about Roughead on Friday, the day after the Hawks veteran was dropped.

The Hawthorn coach said he hopes Roughead returns to the seniors this season, but is unsure when.

Clarkson added that he wants Roughead to work with their younger key position players.

Roughead was in good spirits after Sunday's game, talking up his bag of goals.

He also took seven marks and had 17 disposals.

"The fact I was able to contribute with the boys today was obviously a positive," Roughead said.

"No-one else has kicked five at the MCG this weekend have they?"
