Kangaroos star Lindsay Thomas has risked serious injury to nab a spectacular contender for mark of the year against the Gold Coast Suns.

Thomas needed attention from a trainer after he soared through the air to take a mark during the first quarter.

Leading off from a Jarrad Waite kick, Thomas needed all of his aerial acrobatics to jump over the back of Adam Saad, knocking the head of his rival out of the way as he glided through the air.

However, the 27-year-old returned to earth with a painful thump and was forced to give up the kick to a teammate as he limped away holding his side.

The mark was instantly regarded as one of the best of the season.

"We'll send vision of that around the world," said one commentator.

"That is up there with anything athletically you'll see at any sport on the globe."

However, the spectacular effort was the only highlight for the wayward Kangaroos in the first quarter.

The away side started the second quarter without a major to their ledger after being held to just one shot at goal by the Suns.
