'Couldn't have been true': Riewoldt rips AFL reporter over injury tweet

Richmond champion Jack Riewoldt has ripped an AFL reporter on social media for trying to report facts that "couldn't have been true".

Riewoldt returned to the Richmond line up in the club’s Thursday night round six win over Melbourne after overcoming a wrist problem, yet he was in line for more bad luck with another injury setback suffered during the clash.

He suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury to his right knee that will ultimately see him spend more time off the field.

After the match Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said he was “not quite sure” about the length of time he’ll spend on the sidelines, even though the injury can be a tricky one with healing times ranging from 3-4 weeks all the way up to 8-10 weeks.

Hardwick confirmed his star would get scans on Friday and while the mystery surrounding his injury was clearly evident, one reporter tried to get ahead of the pack and give fans an update which didn’t sit too well with Riewoldt.

Just after midday the next day, AFL reporter Tom Browne sent out a tweet relating to Riewoldt’s injury, telling social media followers the Tigers’ star had already had scans.

“Potentially positive news for tigers star @JackRiewoldt08, believe he has had scans, and significantly avoided the need for surgery. I don’t know exact time frame yet,” Browne tweeted.

Riewoldt hit back at the claims, accusing the reporter of “guessing” when it came to the particulars about the injury. He also slammed Browne’s “sources” and revealed the information "couldn’t be true" because he in fact had scans at 3:30pm on Friday afternoon.

Social media users backed the AFL star over the beef, although he was ruled out for eight weeks with a high-grade PCL injury which won’t require surgery.

It was Riewoldt's first outing in a month after suffering knee and wrist injuries against Collingwood in round two.
