Richmond open to Punt Rd as third stadium

Richmond want to host Melbourne's third stadium, proposing a 40,000-seat development at Punt Rd Oval.

The set up would also include a fans' zone between the ground and neighbouring MCG, with Richmond railway station also part of the upgrade.

The suggestion comes following Eddie McGuire's proposed 60,000-seat ground on the current site of Hisense Arena.

However, Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale's plan would not require the sale of Etihad Stadium, while funding would come from both the state government and AFL.

"Punt Rd should be in the frame," he told News Corp Australia.

"It's an existing venue, it wouldn't require the selling of Etihad, and the Richmond railway station has been the agenda for a number of years and maybe this gives the government the opportunity to redevelop that."

Meanwhile, three Chinese conglomerates have reportedly expressed interest in the purchase of Etihad Stadium for up to $1.3 billion.
