Gawn eyes record, Swans snub laid bare in All-Australian squad
Max Gawn is eyeing off a record-breaking ninth AFL All-Australian selection, after the Melbourne veteran was named in the 46-man squad.
The 34-year-old is currently level with a host of legends with All-Australian blazers, but will stand alone if he can get the nod once more.

Gawn won’t be the only player looking to etch his name into the history books, with Western Bulldogs superstar Marcus Bontempelli potentially joining the elite group of Gary Ablett Snr, Gary Ablett Jnr, Patrick Dangerfield, Lance Franklin, Robert Harvey and Mark Ricciuto to earn eight selections.
The initial squad, chosen by a panel of experts, included eight Fremantle players and six stars from reigning premiers Brisbane.
Sydney, who are sitting near the top of the AFL ladder, only have two players in the wider squad after Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner and Nick Blakey were all ruled out of contention after being stood down by the Swans for an off-field incident.
Their teammate and Coleman Medal winner Charlie Curnow received the nod, as did veteran Brodie Grundy after a seven-year absence from the squad.
Essendon, Richmond and West Coast failed to have a single player selected.
The final 23-man team will be named on Tuesday.
