'Special moment': Port Adelaide legend Travis Boak set to break club's games record

Port Adelaide legend Travis Boak will etch his name into the history books this weekend when he surpasses the late Russell Ebert's long-standing all-time games record.

Standing alongside Ebert's family on Wednesday, Boak revealed that it was Ebert himself who inspired and shaped his successful career.

"It is a special moment, mainly because of what Russell meant to this footy club, to me, to the playing group and so many people in this community," he said.

"It wasn't just about his footy, but the person he was and how he represented himself."

Ebert's family said there's no one more deserving of surpassing the club record.

"Dad would be so proud, I know mum and the rest of the family are so proud it's Trav," Russell's son Brett said.

Throughout his 19-year tenure at Alberton, Boak has rejected lucrative interstate offers to dedicate himself to the club's rebuilding process. 

It's worth noting Boak's milestone this weekend actually includes 20 pre-season games, meaning he needs to play 27 more to reach that magical 400 club.

Although at 36, he says that's one goal that's not currently under consideration.

"My focus throughout the off-season and pre-season was this year, and making sure this is a big year," he said.
