Melbourne champion Christian Petracca's split from big-name agency Connors Sports Management has raised eyebrows.

On Monday, The Age reported that Petracca had parted ways with the AFL player management company. This follows a turbulent nine-month period in the star midfielder's career.

Talent and partnerships professional Anna Scullie — who is also the wife of retired Carlton and Adelaide great Eddie Betts — will now represent Petracca.

Cultural issues at the Demons were in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons last year, with Petracca reportedly disgruntled and wanting out of Melbourne.

The 2021 Norm Smith medallist reportedly sought a trade away from the club at the end of the season but his request was denied.

Petracca's 2024 season was compromised when he suffered life-threatening injuries in an incident in round 13.

He subsequently underwent surgery to repair four broken ribs, a lacerated spleen and a punctured lung.

"I'm sure there was a lot of tension going on during the off-season with him trying to change clubs," Essendon great Matthew Lloyd told Nine's Footy Classified.

Petracca's decision left the panel baffled, leading to speculation as to why Petracca would make the switch just days before Melbourne's round-one match.

AFL journalist Damien Barrett wondered whether Petraccas's blocked trade in 2024 contributed to his switch to Scullie.

Fellow journalist Sam McClure said he had reached out to Petracca's manager, Robbie D'Orazio, who claimed Petracca's feelings towards Melbourne had nothing to do with his decision.

The 29-year-old Petracca signed a lucrative seven-year contract extension in early 2021 to tie himself to the Demons until the end of the 2029 season.

As Connors Sports founder Paul Connors was instrumental in the deal, Petracca will now have to pay him out for the next five years despite no longer being represented by his company. This could be to the value of $300,000-$400,000.

"With five years still to go on the contract that Paul Connors did for him, he's paying out Paul five year's worth and Paul's doing no work for it over the next five years," Lloyd said.

"[But] that would hurt Paul. He would be disappointed losing someone of Petracca's nature because you're trying to attract other players to your stable.

"Normally you would leave with a year to go because you're thinking to yourself, 'Well, I won't lose too much here'. [Now], it's a big payout — I'm talking $300-400,000."

Barrett was also puzzled by the timing and impact the decision could have on Petracca's personal brand.

"It's bizarre timing," he said.

"For someone who is so conscious and disliking of the public use of the 'brand Petracca' slogan that clearly came upon himself last year when he used that in various negotiations to get out of the Melbourne Football Club."

Scullie is not yet an AFL accredited agent but intends to become one.

Because of this, Scullie cannot act as Petracca's agent for football contract negotiations until she is accredited. However, she can still represent him for commercial or brand deals.

'Brand Petracca' has become a social media force, with his latest commercial deal with protein yoghurt brand and Melbourne club sponsor YoPRO.

"[Scullie] can do all the commercial interests," Geelong legend Jimmy Bartel said.

"He's clealy got a big commercial play that is going on. We know all his social media videos, his brand alignment.

"He's excellent at [his side hustle]; he's probably the leading player for maximising his IP (intellectual property) and image by representing different brands."
