'Crucial opportunity to reflect': Essendon receive timely boost as Jordan Ridley commits long-term

Essendon have finally been given some good news, with star defender Jordan Ridley committing to the club until the end of 2029.

Ridley had been linked with a potential trade away from the Bombers after expressing his concerns with the club's high performance staff.

At the time, Brisbane was seen as his preferred destination according to Nine's chief AFL reporter Tom Morris, who first reported the news of Ridley's desire to move.

However, after discussions with Essendon management, he has opted to stay put.

"This off-season gave me a crucial opportunity to reflect on a challenging few years with injury," Ridley said in a club statement on Tuesday night.

"During that time, it became incredibly clear that my future is with Essendon.

"I'm fully committed to playing my best football here. I have immense faith in Brad Scott and the direction he's taking this developing group.

"After meeting with our new high performance team, I've been really impressed and confident we have the right strategy in place to overcome my recent injury challenges.

"My decision was also driven by my great belief in this playing group and the exciting young talent coming through.

"I love this club, I want success for this club, and I'll be doing everything I can to return success to Essendon for everyone."

The club's general manager of list and recruiting, Matt Rosa, praised the one-time Crichton Medal winner for playing an "integral" role in the future of the Bombers.

"To have Jordan Ridley fully committed to our club is terrific news," he said.

"We've spoken externally numerous times about how integral he is to our side as a player, to our youngsters as a leader and to our people as a clubman, and he's always been fully aware of that.

"It was important to us that Jordan was able to meet with Matt to fully understand the important changes we are implementing within our high performance programs.

"We are now looking forward to them building a strong relationship and putting a plan in place to get Jordan back to his best."

Ridley has played 104 games in the red and black guernsey since his debut in 2017.

The positive news comes as the Bombers continue to navigate a tricky situation with captain Zach Merrett, who recently met with Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell.

Merrett spoke to 9News Melbourne at the Brownlow Medal on Monday night, but was coy on where his future lies for next season and beyond.

"There're plenty of factors at play and a fair bit of uncertainty as well," he said.

"I will go into more detail at a later date. For the moment, I'll get through tonight, wake up tomorrow and get back to training.

"Like I say, there will be conversations behind closed doors with the appropriate stakeholders, and we'll see where it lands."

It has been a busy period for Essendon, with club president David Barham standing down from his role on Tuesday morning.
