'I had nothing to do with it': Essendon great James Hird responds to board dramas as president faces the axe

Essendon great James Hird has reacted to the "disappointing" news that his former club is again in the headlines "for the wrong reasons" over a board dispute.
Nine's chief AFL reporter Tom Morris revealed on Sunday night that some powerbrokers were pushing for president David Barham to be ousted from his role.
It comes after a horror few weeks for the Bombers, with the club reeling from captain Zach Merrett's decision to meet with Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell and angle for an exit.

"A major board challenge is imminent at Essendon," Morris said on 9News Melbourne.
"In the wake of an off-season of turmoil, key powerbrokers including at least one former player are preparing a movement that would oust David Barnham as president."

Hird - who has no official role within the club as it stands - was forced to react during his appearance on Nine's Footy Furnace shortly after the report from Morris dropped.
When asked if he was involved in the dramas unfolding in any way, the premiership-winning captain and former coach shut it down immediately.
"Definitely not - not until you told me before we went on the show," Hird said.
"I was disappointed to come on here and have to talk about it.
"I had nothing to do with it and knew nothing about it. This is what's happened, it's disappointing that the club is again in the news for the wrong reasons.
"Hopefully it will play out and the best thing that can happen for the club is we get on and win games of football next year."

Essendon endured another tough season on the field results-wise, with a never-ending injury toll making life difficult for coach Brad Scott and the playing group.
With more changes seemingly on the horizon, Hird conceded things will only improve from a perception point of view if the Bombers turn things around with results.
"I don't think instability is great for a footy club at any stage," he said.
"I just want the focus to be on the Essendon football club winning games."
