Left-field call sees Geelong assistant become frontrunner for Eagles coaching gig
Forget Jarrad Schofield, or even Danny Daly, Eagles fans.
There's a new frontrunner to be anointed West Coast's new senior coach, and he's come from nowhere.
Enter Steven King.

The current Geelong assistant coach, who played 240 games in the hoops and was part of their drought-breaking 2007 premiership, has emerged as a likely candidate for the top job in the west.
According to retired Eagles premiership player Will Schofield, the deal will be done in a matter of weeks.

"Steven King, he's the man that I'm hearing is the number one target for the West Coast Eagles," Schofield said on Fox Footy on Wednesday.
"His resume, there's not a lot more that he could've done. He's coached across four clubs, he's been a captain at a football club, he's a best-and-fairest winner, and he's a premiership player."
King's coaching resume is just as impressive, spending time with St Kilda, the Bulldogs during their 2016 premiership, the Suns as their interim coach in 2023 and now the Cats.

"He's been coaching, he's got the experience that others on that list don't have, and I think he's the guy that West Coast wants," Schofield said.
Schofield is so confident that King is the only option left in the race, he's sure they'll sign him when the Cats' 2024 finals campaign comes to a close.
King has only been involved with the Cats in a coaching capacity since October last year.

"I don't think they're looking at anyone else, it's a coach that's coaching in the finals right now in Steven King with Geelong at present," he said.
"Once they are done and dusted, I expect that to be announced."
The Eagles sacked 2018 premiership coach Adam Simpson just weeks out from the end of the 2024 home-and-away campaign, with assistant Jarrad Schofield stepping in as interim leader.
