Brisbane Lions livewire forward Charlie Cameron slapped with one-match ban for sling tackle

Brisbane Lions goal sneak Charlie Cameron has been slapped with a one-week suspension for his sling tackle against Melbourne defender Melbourne during the Lions 22-point win on Thursday night at the MCG.

The incident occurred late in the first quarter, with Lever being tackled in the Lions' forward fifty by Cameron, before being slung to the ground and hitting his head.

Lever did continue to play, showing no adverse affects of the head hit, however, Cameron has landed in hot water with the MRO.

The tackle has been graded as careless conduct, medium impact and high contact, with no chance of an early plea for Cameron.

Brisbane will feel the loss of Cameron against Geelong at the Gabba next weekend if they accept the penalty or lose at the Tribunal, with the small forward kicking three goals in their second win of the season in round five.

The AFL has cracked down hard on sling tackles in 2024, particularly as protection of the head and long term trauma awareness continues to grow.

The league updated their rulings in the wake of Melbourne midfielder Angus Brayshaw's medical retirement due to head trauma before the 2024 season began.

They also increased local league concussion protocols, forcing players under AFL and AFLW level to sit out at least 21 days after being concussed.

Apart from Cameron's punishment, the Lions put on a clinic at the MCG on Thursday night.

The win was the the Lions' second at the MCG in a decade with the same squad, the first coming back in 2022 when they defeated the Demons again in that year's elimination final.

It was Brisbane's midfield who tore the Demons apart, led by Cam Rayner, who collected 25 disposals and nine clearances in the win.
