MCG to drop food, drink prices

Footy fans heading to the MCG this year are in for a welcome surprise with food and drink to get cheaper at the iconic stadium.

Hot chips are going to be reduced by $1.60, bottles of water will be down by $2 and pies will be down $0.80c.

The reductions are due to a $14m investment by the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) and hospitality partner EPICURE to deliver cheaper family-friendly food at the MCG events.

Some of the new prices are consistent with what patrons paid over a decade ago - the last time bottles of water were $3 was in 2001.

The new prices begin on April 1, starting with the AFL match between Richmond and Carlton the following evening.

"This is an unrivalled initiative in the venue industry," MCC CEO Stephen Gough said.

"In fact, we are reasonably confident that no major venue or sporting event in the world, other than perhaps Augusta National Golf Course, has or can match what we are offering today.”

The MCC said a new kids' meal deal will also be available to families.

The new prices will be maintained for domestic and international cricket events, State of Origin rugby league and football.
