AFL legend Mark Thompson arrested on drug related offences after police raid on home

Former Essendon footballer and senior coach Mark Thompson has been arrested and charged with drug related offences following police raids on his home earlier this year.

The 54-year-old faces seven charges, including trafficking ice and possession of LSD and ecstasy.

Thompson faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday afternoon where he was released on $20,000 bail, and was forced to surrender his passport and live at a fixed address after prosecutors sighted him as a flight risk.

“Mr Thompson has access to a large amount of funds and a yacht as well,” News.com.au reports Detective Senior-Constable Naomi Bourke said.

Victorian police allege ice pipes and ecstasy tablets were found inside Thompson’s bedroom during a police raid on his home in Janurary.

They claim Thompson’s DNA was found on packaging containing 33g of ice, 4.2g of amphetamines and an LSD tablet inside his locked bedroom.

The raid on Thompson’s bedroom also uncovered digital scales, resealable bags and Xanax tablets in the AFL legends bedroom.

Speaking on Footy Classified former teammate Matthew Lloyd expressed concern for his long-time friend.

“He was my first ever captain and one of the most respected people I’ve ever been involved with in football,” Lloyd told Footy Classified.

“It’s so sad to see what’s become of Mark of late.”

Thompson’s former housemate, Thomas Windsor, is facing charges of trafficking commercial quantities of amphetamine and ice as well as trafficking ecstasy.
