I would love to captain Hawks: Lewis

Veteran midfielder Jordan Lewis says the discipline of his AFL teammates makes Hawthorn an easy team to captain.

There is speculation that Lewis will succeed three-time premiership captain Luke Hodge as Hawks skipper from next season.

If there is a change, it will probably be confirmed next month.

"It would sit comfortably, there's no doubt about that," Lewis said.

"I've been around for 12 years now, I'm experienced.

"With the group we have at the moment, it's not a major jump - you don't really have to control this group like some of the other clubs.

"We have a pretty disciplined group and it's quite an easy side to lead."

But Lewis added that Hodge could stay captain next year.

"When the time is right, Hodgey will understand that he's not going to be around forever," he said.

"If he feels the need to pass that on, whether it's this year or next year, there's probably a handful of guys waiting in the wings.

"(Each one) obviously could stand up and lead this team really well.

"Hodgey is obviously the leader and has been a great leader for so long - why tip him out when he's at the top of his game?"
