Docker's 'dropped the World Cup' moment

    Powered by

Fremantle had closed the gap on Hawthorn to just nine points late in last night's AFL preliminary final and were surging towards a grand final berth when a calamitous error from Tommy Sheridan undid all the hard work.

Footage from the match shows the Dockers, partway through the final term, shifting the play when Sheridan drops a simple uncontested mark just inside his back 50.

Much to the 21-year-old’s horror, the loose footy was latched on to by Hawks champion Cyril Rioli who snapped truly with his left foot to put Hawthorn in front by 15.

Hawthorn’s All Australian small forward didn’t miss the opportunity to let Sheridan know about as he celebrated.

The momentum swung on the mistake with the Hawks running out winners, 15.4.94. to 10.7.67.

Sheridan’s shocker prompted commentator and former Geelong premiership captain Cameron Ling to liken the moment to an infamous drop from the 1999 Cricket World Cup.

“He will have that running through his head over and over again potentially for the rest of his life,” Ling said.

“That’s Steve Waugh telling Herschelle Gibbs, ’You’ve just dropped the World Cup.’”
