Demetriou resigns as AFL CEO

Andrew Demetriou has stepped down as chief executive of the AFL, effective at the end of this season.

AFL Commission chairman Mike Fitzpatrick announced the resignation at a press conference with Demetriou and his family.

Fitzpatrick praised the 52-year-old's leadership of the AFL, saying the CEO had put fans and players first in during his career.

"I have always said it has been a privilege to serve the AFL, but the time has come to resign," Demetriou said.

Demetriou took over the reins from Wayne Jackson in 2003 and has overseen the expansion of the league to 18 teams and spearheaded record media deals for sport in Australia.

The former North Melbourne and Hawthorn player has been criticised in recent months for his handling of the Essendon supplements scandal.
