Melbourne and Richmond's on-field leaders have had their wallets lightened for their role in a heated melee during the Anzac Day eve match.

Mid-way through the third quarter, Trent Cotchin's crunching tackle on fellow captain Jack Viney sparked a battle in front of the player races.

Players from the Richmond bench joined in the fight, including vice captain Jack Riewoldt, who who handed a $2500 fine for his efforts.

Demon co-captains Viney and Nathan Jones were both fined $2500 for their involvement.

The trio are no stranger to brawling; for each player, it was the third time they have been charged for their role in a melee.

Cotchin, deemed to have instigated the melee, was fined $1500.

The fight seemed to spark the Tigers, who were 21 points down at the time of the clash but ran away to win by 13 points and maintain their perfect start to the season.
