David Warner named captain of IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad despite Australian leadership ban

Despite being banned from assuming a leadership role in the Australian team, David Warner has been handed the captaincy of IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad.

After his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal, Warner was banned from holding an official leadership position within the Australian team, but the ban does not apply to overseas sides.

Warner previously captained Sunrisers Hyderabad back in 2016, leading the side to the IPL title, and will replace New Zealand captain Kane Williamson in the role.

The 33-year-old being handed the captaincy role comes after former Australian skipper Ian Chappell questioned why only Warner was banned from being in a leadership role.

"To me, this is a decision that has been made on like and dislike. Obviously there is more dislike of Warner than there is of Smith, so consequently, because like and dislike has come into it, they've made an incorrect decision," Chappell said.

"I thought that was a mistake. If you're going to ban David Warner from all leadership for life, then why isn't Smith banned for a lifetime? I can't match that up at all.

"In my eyes, I just couldn't match up this vitriol, with the fact that it was pretty well lumped on Warner and not much on Smith."

Last year's IPL was one of Warner's first international appearances since his 12-month ban, and he starred for his side with 692 runs at an average of 69.2 in the tournament.
