Collingwood has been issued a 'please explain' by the AFL after Jordan De Goey and Jeremy Howe were caught using their phones during the loss to West Coast.

De Goey and Howe were both spotted using their phones during the second quarter after they left the ground and had been ruled out of the remainder of the match through two separate injuries.

Veteran AFL reporter Sam Edmund first raised the issue of the phone use by the Magpies duo.

"Each club has an approved list of 10 staff members, personnel, plus the media department who can use a phone during games and players obviously aren't on that list," Edmund told SEN's Crunch Time.

"So not a hanging offence at this stage, but the AFL are going to ask the question and it could in fact lead to a financial sanction for the club.

"I don't think the league would have liked the look of it on prime time television, the players going to grab their mobile phones."

Former Richmond assistant coach Justin Leppitsch was left confused by how the players could have accessed the phone during the match.

"I'm not sure how they got their phones to be honest, because it goes into your own little pencil case almost and then into a bigger box and I assume that's been locked, it gets locked up by an integrity person," he said.

"So I don't know how that box got unlocked or unless it just stayed open."
