Brisbane Lions senior coach Chris Fagan will undergo surgery after scans revealed he ruptured his hamstring tendon during Monday's Big Freeze 4.

Fagan sustained the injury partaking in the charity event to help raise funds for Motor Neurone Disease research, when he slipped over attempting to exit an ice bath prior to the Magpies clash with the Demons at the MCG.

"It feels worse than any hamstring I've ever done in my life, I must admit," Fagan joked.

"We've got a bye this weekend but there's every chance I might be sitting on the bench once we get back.

"There was a lot of laughter at my expense but it was pretty funny when you look at it."

The Brisbane Lions confirmed the diagnosis on Tuesday afternoon after scans revealed the extent of the injury.

"I must admit it happened so quickly"

"To be honest with you it was a deliberate stunt."
