Western Bulldogs young gun Marcus Bontempelli has hailed the defensive improvement of the early AFL pacesetters.

The Dogs are top of the ladder after crunching St Kilda by 57 points on Saturday night for consecutive wins to open their season.

And the Bulldogs have conceded just 74 points in their victories against Fremantle and St Kilda.

"On the back of last year we have gone to work pretty hard on our defensive style of play," Bontempelli told the Seven Network's Game Day on Sunday.

"We have only conceded 70 points in the first two rounds, so for us that's a big tick and we have just got to continue to do that."

The Dogs next meet reigning premier Hawthorn but Bontempelli expected coach Luke Beveridge to maintain his consistent message no matter the opponent.

"Luke has been great since he arrived day one," Bontempelli said.

"His main focus for us is to play with creativity, sort of almost make things up on the go.

"And that is great for our high defenders because that is how we want to play. We want encourage fast ball movement and really be able to topple opposition defence through speed but also strategy.

"So he has been great at fostering that ideal of making it up as we go and whatever we feel is the right way to play footy at that point of time, to roll with that."
