Eddie McGuire calls for Brownlow Medal date to be moved as Jimmy Bartel reflects on 'whirlwind' first experience

Eddie McGuire has urged the AFL to move the Brownlow Medal away from grand final week, stating the winner "could become the grand final ambassador".

The event falls awkwardly for interstate clubs like Sydney and Brisbane this year ahead of the grand final with players and staff deciding to stay at both cities instead of travel to Melbourne twice in a week.

Jimmy Bartel, who won the Brownlow Medal in 2007, ahead of a grand final, explained how he had to move on straight after the event.

The Geelong great also revealed the 2007 event was the first time he'd attended, describing himself as "a bit of an imposter".

"I looked at these guys, these are the guys I read about ... it's such a whirlwind," he explained on Nine's Eddie and Jimmy podcast

"But then I also had to factor I was playing in a grand final for Geelong, we're trying to break a 44-year drought and so you compartmentalise it, you put it there and you forget about it."

McGuire said this was the reason it should either be put on the Sunday after the grand final or at the end of the home and away season.

"The winner of the Brownlow could become the grand final ambassador," he said.

"Let's say for example, Nick Daicos won it, to have him out there with the kids for the last month, and getting paid a good whack would be fantastic.

"If it's somebody who's in the game, like Lachie Neale, well he still gets a bit of that and then he can concentrate on playing.

"It's an interesting one what we do with the Brownlow and that situation."
