Melbourne Demons' Charlie Spargo suffers injury at training ahead of AFL grand final

The Melbourne Demons had an injury scare just a week out from the AFL grand final with Charlie Spargo going down in training.

Spargo suffered an ankle injury during a training run, but the club believe he will still be right to go for the AFL finale against the Western Bulldogs next weekend.

The small forward got his leg in an awkward position while being tackled during drills on Saturday evening under lights. Medical teams looked at his ankle and pulled him from the training session at Mineral Resources Park.

Spargo, 21, has been a handy player for the Demons this season, chipping in 17 goals this year for the team.

The setback comes just a day after Demons coach Simon Goodwin was forced into isolation with food poisoning.

Goodwin, along with assistant coach Adem Yze, missed the Demons' training session on Friday after waking up with gastro symptoms.

Their decision to isolate was described as a precaution, with no other members of the squad displaying symptoms. "Dodgy linguine" was later blamed for his illness.

"A bit of a dodgy linguine," Goodwin said on the weekend.

"A bit of food poisoning so I've just got to watch where I eat.

"I'm feeling 100 per cent now and ready to go.

"Thankfully it's not something that's going to pass through the players and the club - it's self-inflicted."
