Adelaide back Eddie Betts after AFL legend cops shocking racist slur on social media

Eddie Betts revealed a racist comment he was subjected to on social media following the much-publicised AFLX clash on Friday night.

Betts posted a screenshot of the Adelaide Crows' Instagram account which had an image of Betts showing off his excellent fashion sense during the AFLX's NBA-style arrivals at Marvel Stadium.

Unfortunately one comment in response to the image of Betts read: "Monkey see monkey do".

"When will it stop, why can’t we just play footy,” Betts said in a post on his own social media account, highlighting the offensive slur.

“Why can’t we just all get along?”

Betts, 32, has been outspoken on the issues of racism in sport and in AFL after being targeted by racist taunts on numerous occasions throughout his impressive footy career. In 2016 during a game a Port Adelaide 'fan' threw a banana at him which brought more attention to the ugly racist attacks some players face.

"It's sad that racism still exists in our game," Betts said of that incident.

"Hopefully people can learn from it."

Adelaide released an official comment slamming the recent racist post aimed at Betts.

"The Adelaide Football Club strongly condemns any form of racial vilification and considers such behaviour abhorrent and disgusting," the club said in a statement.

"An offensive social media comment directed at one of our players reinforces the need for everyone to play a role in eradicating racism from not just our game but the wider community."

Crows CEO Andrew Fagan said such comments are "damaging" and should be condemned by all.

“In listening to our playing group and our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players in particular, it is clear how damaging and impactful racism is to them and their families,” Fagan said.

“Put simply, it must stop and all of our players, coaches, staff and board are united in our stand against such cowardly behaviour.”
