What is 'butter skin' - and how do I get it?

Ah, the foodification of a gorgeously glowy, dewy complexion. Over the years, we've seen matte take a backseat to make way for the likes of doughnut skin, glass skin, and now butter skin.
I've been seeing a lot about butter skin on my social media feeds, with content creators flaunting their smooth, hydrated, and radiant complexion. A look so velvety, it truly almost looks like butter melting into toast.
We spoke with makeup artist Emma Chen to learn more about the trend, and most importantly, how to achieve deliciously hydrated skin.

But first, what is butter skin?
Butter skin is all about striking that optimal balance between glowy and matte skin. On the surface, it gives a dewy, velvety complexion with a natural, buttery sheen.
But it goes deeper. It's about more than just appearance; it prioritises skin health, barrier repair and hydration.
Not just another frivolous trend, Chen hopes that it sticks around for good. "It's all about achieving skin that looks deeply hydrated, radiant, and healthy – with a soft, luminous glow that's never oily," she tells nine.com.au.
Why is butter skin popular now?
The rise and prominence of K-Beauty is largely to thank for the growing trend. Its focus on long-term skin health through a holistic, preventative approach, emphasising deep and gentle hydration, has redefined our attitude towards skincare.
Caring for our skin from the inside out is increasingly popular and important. "It's all about nurturing a healthy, glowing complexion so that makeup enhances our natural beauty rather than masking it," says Chen.
What are the best skincare products for butter skin?
So, how best can I prep my skin to emanate a buttery radiance?
Chen recommends a range of serums, creams, and oils to achieve the ultimate buttery skin.
She uses the SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Serum for a boost of moisture, and the O Cosmedics Comfort Cream or La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ moisturiser to keep her skin deeply hydrated and supple.

The technique: How to get butter skin?
We're all busy people, but an extra five minutes in the morning can go a long way. Chen suggests following this simple two-step routine:
Step one: Spend a little time gently massaging your face as you apply your skincare. "This helps your products absorb better and leaves your skin looking plump and radiant," she says.
Step two: Chen's pro tip is to mix a tiny bit of your moisturiser or face oil into your foundation to boost the skin's glowy-ness and radiance. She encourages experimenting with the product to help you strike the perfect balance for your skin.
I'll be trying this out to hack the Butter Skin trend ASAP.
