![<p>New Grand Slam title-holder Carlos Alcaraz immediately sought out his box, including his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, after his 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(7-1), 6-4 victory over Casper Ruud.</p><p>Following suit to his mentor, Alcaraz's rise to the top spot is the first post-New York No.1 ranking change since Ferrero claimed the honour in 2003, similarly as a first-time US Open finalist.</p><p>Entering the hard court season, Ferrero previously said Alcaraz had lost a bit of the joy in tennis.</p><p>Speaking post-match, Alcaraz thanked those who had helped him through that difficult time.</p><p>"I felt the pressure, I couldn't smile on court like I do in every match, in every tournament," he said.</p><p>"So, I came here just to enjoy, you know, to smile on court, to enjoy playing tennis.</p><p>"I love playing tennis and I will tell you if I smile, if I have fun out there [then] I [play at] my best level, my best tennis.</p><p>"So, I would like to say thanks to my team and thanks to my family, everyone who supported me at that moment."</p>](https://static.ffx.io/images/$zoom_1%2C$multiply_1%2C$ratio_1.777778%2C$width_1396%2C$x_0%2C$y_0/t_crop_custom/c_scale%2Cw_764%2Ce_sharpen:60%2Cq_auto:best%2Cfl_any_format/b39b31fbd816952ea6832f9a6a1542eef6c6cb4c)
