Victorian club eager to be part of AFL’s ambitious Indian plans
As the AFL prepares to drastically ramp up its presence in India, one club has out their hand up to be involved if a game ever comes about.
Born and raised in Melbourne, Owen was keen on a career in sports media from a young age.
After graduating high school he immediately started seeking out opportunities, writing reports and features for the Sandringham Dragons Football Club and assistant producing at radio station SEN.
While completing a communications degree at Deakin University, he interned with St Kilda Football Club's media team and the sport department at The Age, leading to ongoing casual work with the newspaper.
In 2021, Owen worked with Seven Network's digital team for the Tokyo Olympics and covered the AFL draft for The Age.
He was then selected to be part of News Corp Australia's 2022 national cadet program, where he rotated around the Herald Sun, The Australian and the national sports newsroom, working from crime scenes to the press box at the MCG. He graduated the program early to work full-time at the Herald Sun as a general news reporter.
In 2024 Owen had a stint living in London, working as a casual news reporter for The Sun and The Times.
Missing sport, he returned to Australia to join the 9News team in Perth as a sports reporter later that year, completing a transition from print to broadcast.
