Young mum dies from choking after attempting party trick

A 24-year-old mother has died after choking on biscuits from attempting a party trick.

Bethan Gaskin, from Lincolnshire, UK, was attempting a food challenge, which went horribly wrong.

The young mum was trying to fit as many chocolate-covered biscuits, known as Jaffa Cakes, in her mouth as she could, but it ended in disaster.

When the snacks got lodged her throat, she tried to spit them out but the beauty therapist stopped breathing and was rushed to hospital.

The mum-of-one suffered from a heart attack and brain damage, and passed away five days after choking in hospital.

One month on from the incident, Bethan’s mother, Michelle Gaskin, has issued a warning for those about the dangers of attempting such food challenges.

“I remember raising my eyebrows when Bethan started the game thinking, ‘how old are you?’ and telling her to spit them out,” she explained, according to the Daily Mail.

“She was like a hamster with her cheeks bulging.”

Bethan went off to the toilet “to get rid of them”, but they soon realised she “had been gone for a long time”.

A friend went to go and see if Bethan was alright, the young mum was found on her bathroom floor.

After calling an ambulance, one of Bethan’s friends attempted to resuscitate her by performing CPR.

However, Bethan’s mum admitted she knew she had lost her daughter at that moment as “too much time had passed”.

The 52-year-old hopes that her daughter’s death will help people recognise how “fragile” life is, and to think twice about doing similar challenges.
