We all need to stand up to bullying in the workplace

Working with a bully is – I imagine – like being in an abusive relationship. You question your ability, your self worth… and think that somehow this person is just looking out for your best interests, when that’s far from the reality.

Sadly not all humans are cut out to be in management. Some thrive and embrace the opportunity to inspire those and push them to new heights in their career… while others let the power go their head. They manipulate the working environment to their benefit, and feed off making those underneath them uncomfortable and unqualified.

There’s been a lot of talk this week about bigwigs in the media industry protecting stars, and on the flip side a lot of people asking why certain allegations of inappropriate behaviour are only coming to light now after 20 to 30 years of silence?

Without wanting to simplify a complicated issue, two to three decades ago workplaces simply didn’t have the infrastructure to deal with complaints. HR were two letters never seen together, and if someone in power was making your life hell at work sadly they were often the person you were supposed to complain to.

We’re hearing lots of accounts in the entertainment world because they make for sexy headlines and tend to involve well known personalities, but don’t be under the illusion that it only happens in this space. Discrimination and harassment has - and is - happening in countless offices, cafes, hotels, and work sites right around the country.
